Cheap international phone calls using Asterisk/FreePBX and local numbers

One of the easiest ways to make cheap international phone calls is to set up a local access number that automatically forwards to an international number using VOIP.

This is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family in other countries (or to let them keep in touch with you!)

It’s very simple to do in FreePBX in two easy steps.

Create a Misc Destination for the number you want to call –

then create an Inbound Route with your local number as the DID Number –

and set the destination to your Misc Destination –

You can then call the local number and be connected to the international number, only paying inexpensive VOIP rates. The local number can be dialled in the normal way, including from a mobile phone.

Give it a go by ringing this London number – 020 3455 4080 – which will connect you to the Naval speaking clock in Washington DC.

Using DISA with FreePBX and A2Billing

DISA is great!

It allows you to call in to your Asterisk server, get a dial tone, and then dial back out as if you were using a normal extension on your system. I use this lots to make cheap international calls from my mobile phone.

You may also wish to route your DISA calls via A2Billing. If you’ve integrated FreePBX and A2Billing as described here it’s a simple case of changing one setting on your DISA setup in FreePBX.

Getting started with FreePBX – Part 6 Cheap phone calls using DISA and Callback

One of the great things about voip is that you can make international calls at local rates.  Combine that with Asterisk/FreePBX and you’ve got the ability to make cheap international phone calls using your mobile phone.

To do this we’re going to setup DISA (Direct Inward System Access). This will enable us to ring our Asterisk server, get a dial tone and then dial back out again.

Then I will show you how you can combine this with callbacks if that works out cheaper for you.

Installing the modules

First we need to install the DISA (if it’s not installed already) and Callback modules. See part 5 for more information about installing FreePBX modules.

Setting up DISA

Now we are going to configure a DISA…

Cheap international phone calls with Asterisk

If you make a lot of international phones calls, or even if you don’t make a lot of them but need to be flexible in how and when you make them, running an Asterisk server could be the way to go.

Asterisk is a OpenSource telephone system that runs on top of Linux. Asterisk can be quite difficult to manage as it involves editing text based configuration files. If you don’t want to do this you can install a web based management interface called FreePBX. This provides lots of management functionality from a nice web based GUI.

Here are just some ideas for how you could use your own phone system –

Cheap calls abroad from your cell phone

Asterisk/FreePBX provides a feature called DISA. This enables to dial into your Asterisk server (via a local access number available from an ITSP such as CallWithUs) and then dial back out again (again via an ITSP). This would enable to call anywhere in the would at a local rate, right from your cell phone.
