Asterisk on Lylix VPS
So I’ve been moving my Asterisk server around a few different providers trying to find out where it’s happiest. This week I’ve moved it from Slicehost to Lylix.
The reason for this was trying to reduce the latency between my SIP providers servers and my Asterisk server. I’ve started using CallCentric as my SIP provider (with Vitelity as my backup provider). I spent a long time comparing rates to the countries that I call the most and these were definitely the best I could find. Also, CallCentric allow you to ‘rent’ local DDI numbers in many countries around the world.
So, the reason for moving my VPS and Asterisk to Lylix was that they are based in New York, the same as CallCentric. I was getting around 50ms latency between my Slicehost VPS in St Louis and the CallCentric SIP servers and this has now bee reduced down to 2ms between my Lylix Asterisk VPS and the CallCentric servers! Pretty good indeed!
Another benefit of using Lylix for Asterisk is that they provide the Zaptel drivers in the kernel (they have special instructions for setting up Asterisk) this means that the Asterisk features that don’t normally work on a VPS (music on hold, conferencing …) should work ok - although I havn’t tried these features yet.
The VPS prices with Lylix are pretty competative. It’s costing $15 a month for a Fedora VPS with 256MB memory, 4GB disk space and 50GB traffic. The 4GB dicspace may not sound like much but is plenty to install Asterisk and FreePBX and as long as you tweak the config files for MySql and Apache 128MB should be plenty of memory, although I went for 256MB.
The VPS with Lylix was set up very quickly. Unfortunately it’s not possible to reimage your own VPS with a fresh OS install and there’s no remote console in case you lock yourself out over the network but other than that it looks pretty good.
I’ve not had to place any support calls yet so can’t comment on that.

I no longer have my Asterisk VPS with Lylix but I was pretty impressed with them and would host there again. Asterisk worked well and the support was always pretty quick.

Why did you move out of Lylix? And where did you move your Asterisk instal to?

I ended up getting a dedicated server from synapseglobal.com and ran Asterisk as an OpenVZ VPS on there. The network quality at synapseglobal was also great. Matt.
